| High Sierra 20" Wheeled Backpack by High Sierra Overall Good design -- needs improvement in three areas | It's difficult to find rolling laptop backpacks that can fit a 17 inch laptop so I was happy to find this one. I recieved the bag just a couple days ago.
The Pros:
1) The fabric the backpack is made from seems top notch.
2) The stiching on the bag is neat and well done.
3) The pockets and special features ensure there is a convenient place for everything that needs to go into the backpack.
4) The included strap for attaching another bag to this one is a nice feature.
The cons:
1) The telescoping handle mechanism seems a bit rickety. It doesn't open and close smoothly and it doesn't inspire long term confidence. I'm hoping to get at least a few months use out of it.
2) The wheels don't roll freely and are not attached in a way that they could easily be replaced if needed. It's really a shame that the handle and wheels make what is otherwise an impressively designed and constructed bag seem cheap. In our home we also have some L.L. Bean rolling backpacks. The handles on these L.L. Bean bags operate smoothly and they are very sturdy and reliable. Plus the wheels can easily be changed with a hex wrench if you wanted or needed to.
3) By far the greatest negative to the bag I received was the odor. This wasn't that new car kind of smell. Although the bag looked great, it smelled of mold and mildew, like it had been stored in a dark and damp place for a long period of time (maybe a warehouse). Because it would be a hassle to send back and because it had taken me a long time to find a design I liked, I decided to try fix it. First, I surface washed it inside and out with mild laundry soap, hot water, and a small amout of bleach and let it dry. This helped but didn't get rid of the smell. Next, I repeated the inside out serface cleaning whith 50-50 hot water and bleach. This has made it a lot better. Now I only smell the mold mildew smell if I put my nose to the material or smell inside the bag. This week I'm going to buy some Fabreze (microbial) and try using that on the bag. | | High Sierra 20" Wheeled Backpack by High Sierra Very disappointed... Don't waste time with the warranty & service - they stink | This is an OK product. Solid and well made, except for the handle, which is unnecessarily flimsy. However, the company's warranty is neither OK nor solid. And their service is useless.
This is not a cheap bag, so I didn't just want to dump it while it was still in almost new condition -- but it might have been less of a pain.
I sent this bag for in-warranty repair, and it wasn't repaired right.
Note: In each of my communications, including when I sent the bag, I gave VERY (obsessively) detailed information about the damage. I even sent photographs of the zipper and the handle. I attached a letter to the inside and outside of the bag with the information and photos showing the problems.
No acknowledgment of my letter was included when the bag was returned. There was nothing saying what they did or didn't do or why.
I tried to contact them both by phone and email, and received no help. No one even responded to my email. The person on the phone simply said: send bag at your own expense.
I sent the bag at my own expense (about 30 bucks) to their repair center with a broken handle and a broken zipper. This center doesn't accept return receipts (the post office told me this) so I didn't know they had received the bag until I got it back a long time later. After about a month I received the bag back.
*The zipper is STILL broken.
*The handle has been reinstalled, but it's STILL DAMAGED -- it doesn't retract or extend smoothly (the SAME symptoms it had just before it completely broke off.) So as far as I can tell, I spent 30 bucks to have them do what I could have done myself: put it together with spit and hope..
I can't rely on the bag for regular use any more. I was about to board a plane when it failed the first time, so I had to purchase an overpriced crappy 'replacement' at the airport, so I have already spent about what it would have cost me to buy a new one. (AND it's not a backpack, so I can't use it the way I used this one)
Unfortunately I will have to buy another bag soon. But it won't EVER be a High Sierra product of ANY KIND.
If I hadn't liked the bag so much, I would never have bothered to send it back for repair. But having tried to deal with this company, it is clear they don't give a rats [butt] about their customers after the sale is complete.
Very disappointed.
PS: the bag was about 1.5 years old, and I didn't abuse it. | | High Sierra 20" Wheeled Backpack by High Sierra Product Description | | High Sierra Sports AT3 Sierra-Lite 2-in-1 Carry-on Wheeled Computer Backpack.
